Subject: Board wide meeting
Posted: Thu Dec 04, 2008 3:58 pm (GMT -5)

Let me clarify a little bit.

I got an email from you a week or so ago just giving an update about the board. I"m asuming that the message was sent out to everybody who is currently a member.

I was thinking about picking a day and time a week or two off and you could inform everyone weeeeeellllllllllllllll in advance. None of this two days notice stuff. That will guarantee a better response/turnout.

My suggestion is Sunday 14th @ 9pm CST.

Also, maybe a lil incentive for showing up........bonus points!!! LOL
Dude,

You should have a night where everybody shows up, announced date and time of course, so we can set a new record for number of ppl on the board at the same time. I think we can beat 27!

Just an idea.

I agree with the above. I'd say though that for a CCNA, the N+ is more beneficial as it covers TCP/IP, the OSI model and a bit of subnetting with some useful help with binary calculations. It also covers the basic DOS commands which you'll need to be familiar with, and not just the commands, but what to do with the output, things like pinging the TCP/IP stack, and what to do when you get an APIPA address returned from an IPCONFIG query. Not so CCNA centric, but handy all the same is a look at Network topology and media. And as a N+ closer, it also teaches you some decent fault diagnosis techniques that, when used in conjunction with most of the rest of the course material, will really help with a decent grounding in how networks work, and how to have a stab at fixing them.
If you can do all these things already then all well and good, I'd say you should do OK with the CCNA study. If these things are new to you, then I too would recommend the N+ as a starting point before diving headlong in to a CCNA...
_________________
A+/N+

I'm currently using Todd Lammle's CCNA study book published by Sybex. I have a couple of other Sybex books too (SQL2000 and NT4 Enterprise Server! ) and I quite like the way they're written.
I also used the Sybex offering for the A+, and Mike Meyers Network + Passport for my N+. I'm hoping Santa wil be bringing me Mike Meyers Security + Passport book for Christmas, 'cos I've been ever so good this year...

Also for the CCNA, Cisco Press publish a book with a lot of the config lines for routers and switches, called the Portable Command Guide which is small enough (for a change! ) to keep in the lap top bag
_________________
A+/N+

I have a couple of 2900 switches running IOS 12[5], and a couple of slightly newer routers, but I forget which model. I'll be adding a pic to the Labs forum in due course
I'm currently trying to recreate the hands on labs in Packet Tracer 5 (I LOVE Packet Tracer) with varying degrees of success. It's all good practice though, expecially when you add "servers" to the network, 'cos I've never added a server to anything so I get a bit of an idea about Default Gateways, IP addresses, DNS and DHCP addresses as they would apply to a server rather than a router/switch, which should be handy for the first 5 minutes of the MCSE Server 2003 class. After that it'll be back to the dumbass questions...
_________________
A+/N+

I think the books/instructor led question depends on you. If you're good at self study, then go for it. Me, I'm not so good so I end up spending the cash. I don't regret it because my A+/N+ only took 7 days, which meant I could easily justify the cost. It was a tough seven days though. One distance learning place I spoke to about taking an MCSE said I should do A+/N+ first, and as a self study at home deal, they reckoned it should take about 3 months if I could dedicate 3-4 hours a day to study, so the 7 day boot camp suddenly became very attractive...
_________________
A+/N+

The above advice is still current in 2008. I took the N+ in the UK in August this year and it was (is) well worthwhile. I thought I knew a decent amount about networking. The N+ course taught me otherwise...
It still counts towards the MCSA, and it does help with CCNA in so far as you get to learn a bit about the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocls, as well as some useful DOS stuff, plus topology and media knowledge too. "Do you know what the OSI 7 Layer model is?" was the second question I was asked by the CCNA course tutor after he'd asked my name! 3 months ago, I'd have looked at him like he was talking Greek!

Just to add to this, I took the A+/N+ in the UK in August of this year and they were still saying that they are "lifetime" certifications.
A+ needed two exams and from what I could tell, the "electable" 602 exam (mentioned above back in 2006) is now compulsory, with the 601 being the original A+ basic minimum. So A+ qualified now means you have the 601 and 602 under your belt.
From my perspective as a "power user" (my instructors choice of phrase, not mine) the A+ was pretty easy, although it did fill some useful gaps in my knowledge and as such I did find it worthwhile. If you are a "power user", and like me have plenty of experience doing O/S installs or re-installs, and you are happy installing DVD drives or PCI cards and other hardware and software to a PC, then the A+ will be comparatively easy to pass, so try not to spend a fortune taking it!
However, if you're brand new to the inside workings of the hardware and aren't keen on software installs or driver downloading and such like, then do study the A+ course. It's as good an introductory course for carrying forwards to a proper IT career as I've seen, and trust me I spent a lot of time looking...
_________________
A+/N+

Thanks for the welcome. I'm looking forward to enjoying some useful Q&A postings and some banter with the lads. I'll do my best to spread the word among the CCNA classes that I'm helping out with (I'm being a "lab assistant" as a way of honing my CCNA skills), and I may even offer some thoughts on the A+/N+ forums. I took the tests back in August so I have current experience of the "new" CompTIA exams. Who knows, it may even generate some more discussion...
_________________
A+/N+

Just taking a break from some CCNA labs and thought I'd say a quick hello. Been reading the subnetting area as it's a subnetting kinda day... /30...
Anyhow, I'll be dropping in from time to time to ask silly questions in pursuit of world domination, as my signature alludes to
Not sure where my IT career will take me yet as it's only 6 months old and I'm working hard to get the basics done so I can get out there. Currently Cisco networking stuff is high on the list (obviously) but I am also interested in security/ethical hacking/pen testing, so if anyone has any suggestions for reading/web sites/labs etc, please chime in

For the record, I'm in London, England where the weather is cold and the beer is served at room temp, and I'm in to computers, cars and girls, probably in that order...
_________________
A+/N+

use dameware! the best for that remote stuff, no client to install or server to set up. it installs a client on the target machine for you when u connect to another machine.

router is fine just youd need i think to uncheck some options in the security for it when you connect to the router to configure it

i use a similar program to connect to my dads computer in florida

but then again hes only got one IP and one node

this may not work for you

maybe you may need free vpn like hamachi
_________________
A+, Network+, MCP (70-290), CCNA

Subject: Network Solution Recommendation
Posted: Sat Nov 29, 2008 3:05 pm (GMT -5)

Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read this and help me figure out what I should implement.

Here is my situation, I'm setting up a network of 5 Windows XP based systems where:

- 4 of them are client machines
- 1 of the machine is a file server using SQL database

I'd like to be able to remote admin these systems remotely but also don't want to make the vulnerable to internet attacks and such.

My goal is to basically allow these 5 machines to share files on the network freely but block all other network access available except only allowing my remote client to connect into the network.

How do I set something like this up as well, do I only need a simple router or should I invest in a business VPN one?

Thank you everyone for reading!
So I was browsing around comptia.org trying to find out if Cisco Systems is a current member of CompTIA when I found the following document called "CompTIA(R) IT Workers and the 2008 Elections - A survey and report by the Computing Technology Industry Associatio (CompTIA) October, 2008."

The, um, "interesting thing" about this article is on document page 7, PDF page 8 of 34. I'm talking about the, um, "data representation" decision for the graphs called "Gender of the Total Workforce" and "Gender of the IT Workforce." The graphs look more appropriate for a "male enhancement" advertisement than representing gender differences.
1. Allow internal to external (i had defined the range of the ip of the internal network)
2. Allow localhost to external

Code:

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain oasis.com.

The error was: "No DNS servers configured for local system."
(error code 0x0000267C DNS_ERROR_NO_DNS_SERVERS)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.oasis.com

For more information, click Help.

i ran dcprmo to install AD, so with that the DNS also had been installed... and since i got only 5 clients i didn't install DHCP..
